About Low Life Barrel House
Low Life Barrel House is located in the south end of Winnipeg near Confusion Corner! They’re Winnipeg’s newest taproom and boast a pretty diverse drink and snack menu. Although they just opened their taproom, Low Life Barrel House has supplied craft beer to Winnipeggers since 2019 and is excited to serve their classic beers under their own roof.
Not a beer drinker? Low Life Barrel House also serves various wines, piquettes, grape ales, and non-alcoholic options as well.

Small Pale Ale
At a lower ABV of 3.4%, the Small Pale is an incredibly approachable craft beer with a traditional beer taste. It’s not overly hoppy, but has that crisp bite that is perfect for cooling down in the summer. Not into the fancy shit—grab a Small Pale Ale!

Dark Mild
Described as a “unique light dark beer”, the Dark Mild is sweet and toasty. With hints of chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, and nuts this drink pairs well as a dessert after a meal. At 4.4% ABV, it’s not too strong.

Foeder Lager
This was my first time having a “foeder” lager. A Foeder is a large fermentation and aging vessel made of wood. This lager has a crisp oak flavour with hints of vanilla and coconut. At 5.2% ABV, it’s not terribly unapproachable, but this wasn’t my favourite drink there.

Lilac & Lime Saison
The Lilac and Lime Saison is a small-batch cask that consists of a blend of House Saison and a Sour Ale base. This Saison is aged on lime zest and Manitoba lilacs. It’s light, refreshing, and absolutely perfect for the hot and humid Winnipeg summers. This is another approachable beer with an ABV of 5%.
General Tips for Winnipeg Taprooms!
Here’s a few general tips for visiting Winnipeg taprooms.
1. Grab a Flight of Beer
Grabbing a flight of beer is the best way to try as many new beers as possible without getting totally plastered! I highly recommend doing this when exploring Winnipeg taprooms you haven’t been to yet.
2. Ask for Recommendations
Asking the bartenders or even the brewers is the best way to find out what the selection is like. Tell them what you normally drink and I bet they can pair you with something just as good—if not better.
3. Try “Small Batch” Seasonal Beers On-Tap
Small batch seasonal craft beer is often the result of new experimentation by the brewery! This beer will be both fresh in taste and time as it’s usually a small batch of limited-run beer.
4. Order Outside Food
Not ALL taprooms will have a kitchen and that’s okay! Most taprooms, like Stone Angel Brewing and Low Life Barrel House will allow you to order food from OUTSIDE! Some will even have food trucks set up during the summer.
5. Locate the Bathroom Early
Don’t wait until you have to go! Find the bathroom early, so after you’ve had a couple it’s not such a big challenge.
6. Go on a Brewery Tour
There are usually designated times and days for these, but you can generally find these on the taproom’s website.
